This tool is designed to help you determine which film bases comprise your collection. Since their introduction in the market, various formats were manufactured on different plastic bases. Some formats were only manufactured on one base, while others evolved over time.

  • Motion Picture

    Perforated roll films created for sale and/or theatrical distribution typically found in 35mm, but also in 65mm, 70mm and other widths. Seen on reels, rolls, strips, or frames.

  • Still Photo (Roll)

    Found in short rolls and may be cut after processing into strips or single images. Includes perforated 35mm still-camera negative, 120 and 220 size roll films and slide (transparency) films.

  • Magnetic Soundtrack

    Perforated roll films with a ferromagnetic coating, either across the entire film (full-coat) or in one or more thin stripes (striped). Seen on reels or rolls, in 35mm, 16mm, and other gauges.

  • Small Gauge Motion Picture

    Perforated roll films created for the home market or for distribution for industrial or educational purposes, typically found in 16mm, 8mm, Super 8, 9.5mm and other sub-35mm widths.

  • Aerial

    Single sheets or rolls of film in sizes of 4x5, 8x10, and 10x 10. Individual sheets of film are found spliced together into large rolls.

  • Microfilm

    Unperforated roll films in 35mm and 16mm widths, and 105mm wide microfiche. Found on reels, rolls, cards or sheets.

  • Sheet (Flat)

    Single-sheet, relatively thick pieces of film commonly found in sizes of 4x5, 5x7, and 8x10 inches. Often referred to as cut film or flat film.

  • X-Ray

    Large format sheet film commonly found in sizes of 8x10 and larger, including 10x12, 11x14 and 14x17 inch sizes.
